15 Pride and Prejudice motion pictures

Hello there!

I've been neglecting my posts, but not this blog or Dizzy. I have two new stories cooking - and giving me a run for my money to finish them.

It's my new Dizzy universe: Prince and Jane's story. I've already talked about the unprecedented need to tell Jane's PoV and how much this story was grwoing in me (no pun intended). It is half done already. It'll be a three part thing, very intense and sweet.

Meanwhile, I've been visiting Mickey Mouse's Florida retreat in a month long vacation, exasperated with our nation's next 4 years president election (very frustrating and very upseting).

My little corner of the world may turn this way or that, but Jane Austen will always be a safe port. Right? So, my facebook pals have posted these lovely portraits of all things Pride and Prejudice (how delightful!) and I decided to list them. Kinda like put a name to a pic.

1940 : I always thought this version had a 'Gone with the wind' vibe. Lawrence Olivier as Mr. D, what can I say? Impressive!...

1952: A a BBC miniseries. Couldn't find much, sadly I've never wtched it. but Mr Cushing seems a little old for Mr. D who had 28 years old in canon. I know, who am I to point that out? Me, who plays with this characters insesantly. I'll keep searching for it and when I do find, I'll update this post.
1958: Also a BBC miniseries. I found a youtube video with several pictures. Also, sadlsy, I haven't watched it. BTW, Darcified rocks!

1967: Either Google and Wikipedia lie to me or BBC is really our Austen feeder. Here goes another one... And Mr D has very pretty hair! Oh, my!... Found one episode.

1980 : Easier to find, this version has a blondish Lizzy that I don't really care for. My Lizzies have to be brunettes, Mr D too. I've tried making him blond but it sounded weird. Guess who is responsible for this miniseries? Yeah, our dear BBC!

1995 : My favorite, even if Elle and Firth are way too old to portrait Lizzy and Darcy. I have a soft spot for this version and until a better one comes, this is it for me.

2001 : So cute this movie and so blah! the book... I decided to read Bridget Jones after watching the movie and hated it. But Darcy's Christmas jumpers are so damn cute! Here's to Darcy and his Natasha!
2004 : A Bollywood version, blondish Darcy, fun, colorful. Not my fave but nice. (I'll always see P&P as something nice. Always.)
2005 : Famous, M&M portrays a cute Darcy, not a particular fan of Knightley but I liked the Darcy side of the story a lot (that's Georgiana, Fitzwilliam, Bourgh, Collins, Bingleys) - PS: Caroline is way cuter than Lizzy... Lucky us she is such a b*tch.
2008 : Nice but not my cup of tea. This version has a spirited Lizzy who doens't pair with Darcy. Ooops, spoiler? Sorry. The best cast for the Bennets, by far! Loooove Mrs B, my eternal ER doctor.
2013 : Light eyed Darcy, cute fast talker reddish Lizzy: Love it! Several posts here talking about them since week 3 on you tube. A must see(horses)! ;)

2013 : BBC strikes back. Hate this washed away Lizzy, love Kevin but don't care for this Darcy. It's fun if you forget all about Austen.

A blond Lizzy - and I do not like when she is not a spirited brunette, but a Dizzy nonetheless. Funky Darcy. Nice.

2012: A modern Pride and Prejudice

Didn't watch this indie production. Seems like home made and this is what I do: Home made Pride and Prejudice. Will update this post as soon as I watch it.

2013: Austenland

Another case of book blah and movie super cute. Come on: JJ as Darcy??? Yumilicious!

This not Lizzy is funkier than Lost in Austen not Lizzy. In my humble PoV.

Liked it a great deal!

How many did I miss? A couple? Hundreds?

I read a online article that said something like 'It's a turth universally acknowledged that from time to time there shall be another P&P adaptation.'

Hey,
Hot in here, but there's no news...
While it's freezing up there in lovely New York, it's toasty down here.

Not easy to find stamina do work, much less leave the AC in the morning. yesterday it was amazingly 32°C at 10PM!!!

"Aunt Saffronia took the  basket. “Lovely!  I will  give them the chef and we shall see  what  splendid  treat  he  can  make  out  of  them.  You  must  stay  for  dinner,  Amelia.  I insist.” 

“Thank you, I will.” 

Jane and Miss Charming exchanged frowns. 

The  four  ladies  sat  and  chatted,  or  mostly  Miss  Heartwright  and  Aunt  Saffronia chatted  while  Jane  and  her  unhappy  ally  listened,  glumly  plucking  at  their  embroidery. 

But among her other qualities, Miss Heartwright was also generous in her attentions. 

“Miss Erstwhile, do you enjoy novels?” 

“I do, yes. "

“I know they are naughty things, but I devour novels.  The Castle of Otronto had me in chills.” 

“Yes, how can I forget that giant helmet?” Jane had done her homework on gothic romances  a  few  years  ago,  thank  goodness,  in  an  attempt  to  appreciate   Northanger  Abbey.  “But  Mrs.  Radcliffe’s  writings  are  my  favorite,  particularly   The  Mysteries  of  Udolpho.” 

Miss  Heartwright  clapped  her  hands  with  delight.  “Wonderful!  We’ll  have  so much to talk about. I hope you will call on the cottage often during your stay.” 

Jane  was  spared  an  answer  when  the  maid  announced  that  the  gentlemen  had returned from the fields. 

“Show them in, thank you,” Aunt Saffronia said.

The gentlemen entered, looking smart in their sporting attire, rough and handsome in  grays  and  browns,  redolent  of  grass  and animals.  Jane  stood  before  them,  thinking about  whether  an  1816  woman  would  arise  for  men,  and  then  fumbled  her embroidery, sending it to the ground. Colonel Andrews bent to pick it up. On his breath she caught a whiff of tobacco, which only slightly damaged the pleasing effect of his charming smile up close."

Keeping Mr. Darcy

Hi there!

Darcyland is grooving here for me. 45 days in Europe with Mr. Darcy is under revision and I must say it's lovely. And... I've just finished reading Austenland .

My Darcy friends want to discuss the book before the movie comes out here in Rio and so, we're all reading it. My opinion in one sentence?

If you think your obssession with Mr. Darcy is a problem, Austenland is not a safe place for you.

Why? Because he lives there...

Let me make myself clear: the book is engaging, a page turner even but... from page five you know how it will end. You may say that for a Pride and Prejudice afficionado as myself, predictability IS NOT an issue. It's not. But something in Austenland made me uncomfortable.

For starters, I can't understand why someone would pay to live a romance. It sounds like the call girl business only immature and gullible. Because when one hires a call girl/boy, sex is the main service provided - Anais/Charlotte from my 'Image and Likeness' would snort derisevely in my face - but in this case, the guests in Austenland hire romance regency style.

Of course I relieve the regency romance in Mr. Darcy and Lizzy's offhand courtship over and over, reading and writing their story incessantly. I love their love but I never saw myself as Lizzy. In my head, I'm always someone from the outside witnessing it click between then. In Austenland, a guest could say: I want to be Elizabeth Bennet . Or I want to be Catherine Morland , or Anne Elliot . And then, bam! A dashing British actor would materialize as Mr Darcy , Mr. Tilney or Captain Wentworth and play the part with her.

Theater? Yes, theater! I get that. But... how can I put this?... It gave me the idea of being a loser proposition for losers. If one likes a book soooo much to the point of choosing to reenact it, she is related to the book. And then, she pays someone to fall in love with her, no, she pays someone to reenact the story she loves so much making her feel like the heroine. If she relates to the story so much, wouldn't it be heartwrenching? It's not real after all...

Throughout the book I kept hoping for a twist like......work at Austenland. Sorry, mild spoilers but... Nope, nada, zip. It didn't happen...

One thing I hated: the innumerous references to both the BBC series and the 2005 movie. The heroine is obssessed by Firth's Darcy but does she need to find him playing pool in his waist coast? Does he need to say 'Your hands are cold.' when they have a moment? I didn't like it. Nah... tacky.

One thing I loved: the banter between Lizzy and Darcy Jane and Nobley. Deliciously Austeny, tallyho!


The book is lovely, engaging, good humored but... blergh. 

Maybe I consider myself a loser as humungous as Jane Erstwhile.

Yeah, that's probably it.

Let me close this post with a token from Mr Darcy judge , it always lifts my spirits.
