Vicious Weapon - a historical nano tale

hello,

Here I am with another tiny little tale to amuse your uncertain quarantined days. It's the best I can do.

Just like the song that sticks to our brains, to ease your Level of Concern, I'm gonna tell you a gossip I heard the other day. Gossips are, almost all the time, juicy; so here it is in the form of a Victorian nanotale.

Enjoy!

Vicious Weapon
Vitorio Reggianini - The secret

Cecille, Baroness Westbrook, looked at her lover who calmly read the newspaper in the cabinet, a cigar stuck between her teeth, and sighed. There, alone with him, she was Cils and he Cici, simply.
With a nod to the butler who opened the door for her, she left thinking: En garde.
Ten steps to disgrace, a few moments until her life was decided in the visiting room of Bominda, the Abominable Baroness.
Cils hated that snobbish neighborhood, the white houses, the lack of privacy; she hated being recognized wherever she went, she hated even more the misfortune of having been seen treading the passageway of shame on her way out of the Albany covered walkway.
She imagined her name in the mouth of all the ladies at the tea party where she was heading just like a culprit condemned to the scaffold. 'She ran out, did she?' and 'From the apartment building for single men?' and 'Married to the elderly Westbrook, lover of a mysterious young man!'
The Abominable's butler took her coat and indicated the stairs, she went up hearing ghost voices in her head; she twisted her features in anger, felt her cheeks flush. ‘Late at night, in a dark cloak, but I know it was her!’ and ‘The little slut, doublecrossing the baron!’
The hum of female conversation stopped when she entered, her face the color of cherry. Moved by indignation, trembling fingers taking off the kid's glove on her right hand, Cils went directly to Bominda and... slap!
‘Choose your weapon.’
There was a widespread, loud and terrified gasp.
That was it, the challenge that would solve everything at once. She smiled, already victorious, looking at the shoulder of the abominable baroness. Cils was an expert hunter, she controlled a pistol like no one else. The other would never wear ample cleavages again, she would have to hide the scar in shawls.
With her hand on her face where the slap burned more in humiliation than on her skin, Bominda squinted. 'Ink and feather.' She replied, starting a new gasp across the room.
Everyone understood that it was war.

Just like  Cloistered, this nanotale is a gift to dear friends, my quanrentine companions through endless whatsapp conversations. Each one of us in her own cage, we do gossip A LOT! Cecille and Bominda come from one of these funny afternoons.

Duels were forbidden when this nanotale is set, not only in England, but many other places. Since the 18th century, actually.
Nevertheless, there are many tales of vendettas solved on the vuming end of a pistol or bloodied point of a sword.
Between ladies, there are amazing tales of fighting undressed to the waist to avoid soiling the clothes, and the reasons were incredible: flowers, gossip, etc.
It's a great subject, every other day I get stuck researching it and this tale made me think about defending one's honour. Maybe someday it'll evolve to a novel or a cool post. Maybe both.

For now, I invite you to appreciate this zoom meeting of the Hamilton musical cast surprising a young fan on the hot John Krasinski home show.
The musical, famous for its diverse cast much like the (dystopian) Netflix Bridgerton and Baker Street Irregulars, tells the life and glory of USA founding father Alexander Hamilton. Politian, law virtuoso, military commander, lawyer, banker and economist, he spent his life around duels. Both him and his first born son died on the result of duels.
Lin Manuel who plays Hamilton was in Mary Poppins 2, so I'm gonna like anything he's in. Right?  Supercalifragilistespialidoso!

Cloistered - a historial nano tale

Hello!
Inspiration is something that comes and goes, even in the most difficult times. The other day a friend called me to chat, we laughed a lot, enjoyed the distance between us, complained about other stuff and I kept wondering...
Today it is done!

Cloistered
Declaration of love, Tolmouche

Teeta sighed both in sadness and frustration, what good could a letter bring her at that moment? Truly, he did write beautifully, chose long words and used lovely endearments. The problem was that he announced in a pretty manner that indeed he was unable to meet her because stupid Navy ordered him to keep to Dartmouth in stupid Devon when she was to attend her mother’s ball in stupid London. Oh, hell’s bell’s! Teeta loved to curse as such, even if only in her head. Hell’s bell’s! She had had so many plans for the occasion, it would be quite a shock, she was well aware of, her mamma, the dear Duchess of Nectaroy, would feel her heart stop when the dashing captain appeared to claim her first, supper and last dances. Teeta smiled to herself imagining the scandal, Lady Eustaquia conceding three dances to the same gentleman! And a man of uniform, of all possibilities! Why, oh why, had the stupid Navy had to cloister officers in the Naval College? Was a bout of lice so severe as to quarantine all the dashing men? Another sigh. Well, Teeta did admire the great efforts of Miss Nightingale, she had even started the training of the Lady with the lamp. Surely the Navy wouldn’t turn down the aid of a nurse, would it?

* the end *

Mini tale for my dear friend who, as me, is suffering the weirdness of these uncertain days. Ah, this quarantine is affecting so many shenanigans, if only this vile virus could know...

Teeta is whining about her dashing officer's distance while he is to stay at Britannia Royal Naval College, commonly known as Dartmouth, the naval academy of the United Kingdom and the initial officer training establishment of the British Royal Navy.
The training of naval officers at Dartmouth dates from 1863, when the HMS Britannia was moved from Portland and moored in the River Dart to serve as a base. In 1864, after an influx of new recruits, Britannia was supplemented by HMS Hindostan. Prior to this, a Royal Naval Academy (later Royal Naval College) had operated for more than a century from 1733 to 1837 at Portsmouth, a major naval installation. The original Britannia was replaced by the Prince of Wales in 1869, which was renamed Britannia. wiki

Also, unbeknowst to her mamma, the Duchess, Lady Teeta was disgracing her noble stance by studying to be a nurse under the revolutionary training of Florence Nightingale who also had disgraced her background by searching a profession. Nightingale came to prominence while serving as a manager and trainer of nurses during the Crimean War, in which she organised care for wounded soldiers. She gave nursing a favourable reputation and became an icon of Victorian culture, especially in the persona of "The Lady with the Lamp" making rounds of wounded soldiers at night. wiki

anyways, quarentine goes on...
apparently FOR EVER!

Knowledge - a historical nano tale

Hello!
My new book is off to revision and beta reading, yay! Soon, probably for Valentines, DIRTY PETTICOATS will be live.

While I wait and bite my nails, I search interesting stuff and found Michel Garnier. How amazing was this 18th century artist!
So, I found a lovely portrait of a lady and her maid and...

Enjoy!
Knowledge
She so much wanted to know the man's answer. Begged and complained, repeated all ugly bad words she knew - very mild, actually. If she had bothered to ask, Mimi the maid, could have been of great help. The fashionable drawing room provided resources to any accomplished & powered girl. 'Tea in a black pot, baguette of crispy and hot, porridge in disgusting goop, all make the lover spill the loot.' Be the man strong minded, a few drops of sour herb syrup in his tea would have to be added, but the lady chose the weakest link of a wealthy family, even simple enchantments would have propelled the wretched letter to arrive sooner. 'Bitter tears, deluded sorrow, better sip cat tail beer, or anger follows.'
Sometimes Mimi confounded her witchcraft rhymes with predictions for the future. Maybe, if she knew her letters & numbers, she could include ideas in that book the mistress read...

This nanotale has a continuation...

I so loved his work that I composed

this double nanotale of a complicated romance.

Maids in old centuries had to be extra cautious with what they heard, didn't they? Laments, promisses, incriminating gossip.
Jeune femme remmetant un lettre à sa servant - 18th cent. Wiki

A famous romance of the Portuguese author Eça de Queiroz - loooove him - called Cousin Basílio (Primo Basílio) has a dark tale of how a maid could disgrace the life of her mistress simply by knowing too much. It's a great read.

As for sorceres, they are lovely creatures to portrait, love them!
In 18th century, there still was persecution and laws to prevent the malefic acts. Huh!
friends
I watched a great TV show the other day, Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell about magicians in England. Only US$ 4,99 the entire season, but so hard to find here in Brazil... It's very interesting, and based on a book!
You can say the show talks about MAGIC not SORCERY. Ah, but that is a lovely discussion!
BBC one

While searching the show, I found lovely vintage trays and well, we can never have too many vintage stuff, Right? What if we decide to play the gossiping maid in the next Jane Austen event?
how precious!

BTW, my new book will be a JAFF! Lovely sweet romance filled with gossiping women and lovely love for Darcy and Lizzy. First time I go PG 13 in English, it felt nice to let the story set the pace and not include hot scenes.

Anyway... read my other NANOTALES here.

Things that escalate

hello,
Yesterday we finished watching Big little lies, the HBO tv show, very famous cast, great production.
Love this opening sequence...

I loved it.

And couldn't help but see myself caught up in a similar web of petty gossip involving kids. Urgh, I hate that part of motherhood!

When my son was 4, only 4!, I posted a seemingly innocent comment on a Facebook picture of him holding a girl. It wasn't me who first posted the pic, it was the girl's mother, and I simply answered in good humor and good faith saying something like 'he has been gaining sweethearts' to which the effing woman answered in a lashing: Her hubs do not want to think about boyfriends.

Oh, dear!... Of course I answered in a similar dose of harshness, she said she wasn't offended by my comment and neglected to ask if I was offended with the public lashing - that unfortunately was seen by several friends because she had tagged me in the picture.

How could I keep talking to that woman? I'm constantly fearing another lapse of good sense...
The TV show is all about that, exactly that pettiness where everyone is both guilty and victim.
And there's a big line: 'Women are chemically incapable of forgiving.'
Guess I am... If and when the right button is pushed.

Anyway, the tense story also had the disturbing acknowledgment that Laura Dern and Nicole Kidman are old... And had pretty weird face jobs. Botox, perhaps?

Also, as another strong vilan, we had Eric Northman...

*swoon*
Let me finish with such a Cad of a vampire (here he prays in something other than blood).

C ya.
